Cytoskeleton
The cytoskeleton is a network of protein filaments that helps the cell to maintain its shape and is involved in many forms of cell movement. Microfilaments and microtubules are two of the principal protein filaments that make up the cytoskeleton.
Microfilaments are threadlike structures that form extensive networks to produce a tough, flexible framework to support a cell. They also help cells move.
Microtubules are part of the cytoskeleton that help maintain cell shape. They also play a role in cell division and help build projections from the cell surface, which are known as cilia and flagella. These structures enable cells to swim rapidly through water.
