WHAT ARE EUKARYOTIC CELLS?

Life is Cellular

EUKARYOTIC ORGANELLES
Nucleus

Nucleus - the "control center"

The nucleus contains nearly all the cell's DNA and with it the coded instructions for making proteins and other important molecules. Most nuclei contain a small, dense region know as the nucleolus. The nucleolus is where the assembly of ribosomes begins.

Granular material in the nucleus is called chromatin -- DNA bound to protein. When a cell divides, the chromatin condenses to from chromosomes which are distinct structures containing the genetic information that is passed from one generation of cells to the next.

The nucleus itself is surrounded by a nuclear envelope composed of two membranes. This nuclear envelope has pores which allow material to move into and out of the nucleus.
